OPT was formed by Dr. George W. Taylor and the late Dr. Joseph R. Burns in pursuit of their vision of harnessing the boundless energy of the world’s oceans. Starting in 1994 OPT has focused on its proprietary PowerBuoy™ technology, capturing wave energy using large floating buoys anchored to the sea bed and converting the energy into electricity using innovative power take-off systems.

Commencing in 1997, ocean trials have been conducted off the coast of New Jersey to demonstrate the concept of using a floating buoy to capture wave energy and convert it into electricity. The technology is on a growth curve towards full-scale commercial application, recent examples of which are the 40 kW-rated PowerBuoys installed in Hawaii and New Jersey.

Ocean Power Technologies Inc. was floated on the London Stock Exchange’s AIM market in October 2003 following a successful IPO, and is traded on the AIM market under the symbol “OPT”.

The Company completed its US IPO and listing on Nasdaq in April 2007, and is traded on Nasdaq under the symbol “OPTT”.

OPT has begun the initial phase of installation of a 1.39 MW wave farm off the northern coast of Spain. The project is a joint venture with the Spanish utility Iberdrola SA. A full size demonstration plant of up to 5MW capacity is planned for installation in UK waters.

Technology

OPT’s PowerBuoy® wave generation system uses a “smart,” ocean-going buoy to capture and convert wave energy into low-cost, clean electricity.

The rising and falling of the waves off shore causes the buoy to move freely up and down. The resultant mechanical stroking is converted via a sophisticated power take-off to drive an electrical generator. The generated power is transmitted ashore via an underwater power cable.

A 10-Megawatt OPT power station would occupy only approximately 30 acres
(0.125 square kilometers) of ocean space.

Sensors on the PowerBuoy® continuously monitor the performance of the various subsystems and surrounding ocean environment. Data is transmitted to shore in real time. In the event of very large oncoming waves, the system automatically locks-up and ceases power production. When the wave heights return to normal, the system unlocks and recommences energy conversion and transmission of the electrical power ashore.

Technology

BioWave

The wave power system, bioWAVE™, is based on the swaying motion of sea plants in the presence of ocean waves.

The hydrodynamic interaction of the buoyant blades with the oscillating flow field is designed for maximum energy absorption. In extreme wave conditions the bioWAVE™ automatically ceases operating and assumes a safe position lying flat against the seabed. This eliminates exposure to extreme forces, allowing for lighter designs and substantial cost savings.

Systems are being developed for 250kW, 500kW, 1000kW capacities to match conditions in various locations.

BioStream

The tidal power conversion system, bioSTREAM™, is based on the highly efficient propulsion of Thunniform mode swimming species, such as shark, tuna, and mackerel.

The bioSTREAM™ mimics the shape and motion characteristics of these species but is a fixed device in a moving stream. In this configuration the propulsion mechanism is reversed and the energy in the passing flow is used to drive the device motion against the resisting torque of an electrical generator.

Due to the single point of rotation, this device can align with the flow in any direction, and can assume a streamlined configuration to avoid excess loading in extreme conditions. Systems are being developed for 250kW, 500kW, and 1000kW capacities to match conditions in various locations.

BioBase

BioPower Systems has developed a novel singular mounting system called bioBASE™. This system is modeled on the seabed holdfast mechanism used by large sea plants, such as the giant kelp. In such systems, the vertical and lateral loads that are translated to the seabed by the main shaft are re-distributed into many smaller elements that engage with the bottom strata. This mechanism serves to distribute the forces and alleviate excess loads.

The bioBASE™ utilises rockbolting technology for the multiple ‘roots’ of the system, and does not require large specialised vessels or drill rigs due to the small gauge of each bolt.

Once the bioBASE™ has been installed, the surmounting device (either the bioWAVE™ or the bioSTREAM™) is easily attached and secured with the assistance of a single surface vessel. Other applications of the bioBASE™ technology are offshore wind turbines and deepwater foundations.

Hydro Green Energy, LLC is a for profit renewable energy project developer and integrator that designs, builds, and operates kinetic hydro power projects that generate electricity exclusively from moving water (river currents, tidal currents, and ocean currents) without having to construct dams, impoundments, conduits, or other infrastructure projects.

Hydro Green Energy sells the power generated by the patented hydro power turbine arrays (HTA) via long term power purchase agreements to project equity partners or power marketing firms at wholesale rates. Operating as an Independent Power Producer (IPP), kinetic hydro power offers the lowest cost renewable energy source since water current resources are predictable, available 24 hours a day unlike solar, and have an energy density 850 times greater than wind.

Hydro Green Energy has been awarded a U.S. Patent and has International Patents pending on the Company’s core technology. Additional U.S. Patents are pending. Additional International Patents are pending on technologies surrounding the Company’s core patent. Renewable energy production is extremely attractive due to the fact there are no raw material costs associated with the power generation or deleterious unwanted side effects such as the generation of greenhouse gasses or nuclear waste. Although many different schema have been tried in various renewable energy markets, most suffer the debilitating issue that the produced energy costs more than competitive fossil fuel based power generation methods.

The motivating concept behind the Hydro Green Energy is to reduce the cost of non emitting renewable energy production so that it is less expensive that fossil fuel generated power.

A central technology applied in Verdant Power’s Kinetic Hydropower Systems is the Free Flow Turbine, a three-blade horizontal-axis turbine designed to capture energy from the natural flows of tidal or river currents.

Free Flow Turbines are installed and operate fully under water, invisible from the shore. They are scalable to various sizes depending on site characteristics, and can be grouped into small or large clusters to produce village- or utility-scale power.

Free Flow Turbines rotate at a slow rate, allowing for safe fish passage and causing minimal environmental impact.
