Technology

Dyesol’s technology is based on Dye Solar Cell (DSC), which has been identified in the Japanese and EU Photovoltaic Roadmaps as the emerging solar technology, it has also been called the most promising advance in solar cell technology since the invention of the silicon cell.

DSC technology can best be described as ‘artificial photosynthesis’ using an electrolyte, a layer of titania (a pigment used in white paints and tooth paste) and ruthenium dye sandwiched between glass. Light striking the dye excites electrons which are absorbed by the titania to become an electric current many times stronger than that found in natural photosynthesis in plants.

 

Compared to conventional silicon based photovoltaic technology, Dyesol’s technology has lower cost and embodied energy in manufacture, it produces electricity more efficiently even in low light conditions and can be directly incorporated into buildings by replacing conventional glass panels rather than taking up roof or extra land area.

 

Advantages include not necessitating the use of high-priced raw materials, a manufacturing process that does not produce toxic emissions, and the potential for rapid efficiency enhancement.

 

Dyesol enjoys a lead position in developing and commercialising DSC technology.

 

Product

The building blocks for Dyesol’s products are Dye Solar Cells interconnected and integrated into modules (tiles). The tiles are ochre, with introduction shortly of other colors such as grey, green and blue. These tiles can be connected in series or parallel to produce Solar Panels.

In Dyesol’s registered design for building integratable Solar Panels, the panels are constructed in a laminated structure, with the tiles connected and sandwiched between two panes of glass and fully encapsulated in the UV resistant transparent laminating polymer (Solar Wall Panels). Dyesol’s Solar Wall Panels are designed for exposed mounting and to be isostructural to existing fascia – replacing, not duplicating, the existing facade. Electrical interface can be typically via a short DC bus to a local area network for distribution or inversion to AC.

Products

Solels technology converts sunshine into useful thermal energy, and subsequently into electricity, by way of parabolic mirrors that concentrate the solar energy onto solar thermal receivers containing a heat transfer fluid. The heat transfer fluid is circulated and heated through the receivers, and the heat is released to a series of heat exchangers to generate super-heated steam. The steam powers a turbine/generator to produce electricity delivered to a utilitys electric grid.

A central computerized tracking facility enables optimal absorption of the suns energy by automatically adjusting the alignment of the parabolic mirrors. From the moment the sun rises until it dips over the horizon, all of its rays are captured and converted into usable energy.

With a back-up of alternative fuels, a solar plant can operate beyond daylight hours.

Daniel MOULENE an engineer as well as President and founder of LUMENEO, has worked in the business environment for more than 30 years. In order to create the LUMENEO Company, Daniel left his job in the Environment SA group (A company of 200 employees, one of the world leaders in the environment business, was placed on the French Euronext stock market in January 2006). He was Vice President of the group since 2002. Between 1998 and 2002 he was Chairman and Managing Director of the company SFI, Société Française d’Ingénérie. From 1990 to 1997 he was Chairman and Managing Director of the company Emission SA.

Thierry MOULENE, Technical Director and co-founder of LUMENEO, worked for a French subsidiary company of PININFARINA. During his time there, he took part in the realization of three concept cars: NISSAN Terranaut, RENAULT Egeus and RENAULT ZOE. Prior to that, he was also involved in the development of the Peugeot 907, inside the Peugeot Style Center.

The LUMENEO company is based on the complementaries of the two founders, Thierry MOULENE and Daniel MOULENE. One offers great skills in the high-end automotive design, and the other has strong experience in the management of fast growing companies but also in the production and marketing of innovative products.

The team is currently made of engineers and technicians specialized in cars and electronics. The company team will be made of 20 people by the end of 2008 and a growth of more than 50 % per year is planed.

The Car

The heart of SMERA is a central electronic system. It manages the whole information of the vehicle, starting from the signals provided by an integrated inertial system.

The optimal tilting angle is determined by the dynamic parameters of the car, the turning curves, the selected driving mode and the road quality.

Magenn Power draws on over 30 years of research and development in advance materials and structure. It all began with designing the Magnus Spherical Airship starting in 1978. Fred Ferguson (founder of Magenn Power) patented the Magnus Airship in the 1980s. This unique airship utilized the Magnus effect for the first time in lighter-than-air craft. This Magnus Airship was a large spherical envelope filled with helium to achieve static, buoyant lift. As the sphere rotated during forward motion, Magnus lift was generated proportional to the airspeed flowing over the sphere; the faster the vehicle, the higher the Magnus lift.

Technology


The Magenn Power Air Rotor System (MARS) is an innovative lighter-than-air tethered device that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, efficiently generating clean renewable electrical energy at a lower cost than all competing systems. This electrical energy is transferred down the tether to a transformer at a ground station and then transferred to the electricity power grid. Helium (an inert non-reactive lighter than air gas) sustains the Air Rotor which ascends to an altitude for best winds and its rotation also causes the Magnus effect. This provides additional lift, keeps the device stabilized, keeps it positioned within a very controlled and restricted location, and causes it to pull up overhead rather than drift downwind on its tether.

All competing wind generators use bladed two-dimensional disk-like structures and rigid towers. The Magenn Power Air Rotor system is a closed three-dimensional structure (cylinder). It offers high torque, low starting speeds, and superior overall efficiency thanks to its ability to deploy higher. The closed structure allows Magenn Power to produce wind rotors from very small to very large sizes at a fraction of the cost of current wind generators.

The distinct advantages of the Magenn Air Rotor System design are as follows:

  • Magenn Air Rotor System is less expensive per unit of actual electrical energy output than competing wind power systems.
  • Magenn Power Air Rotor System will deliver time-averaged output much closer to its rated capacity than the capacity factor typical with conventional designs. Magenn efficiency will be 40 to 50 percent. This is hugely important, since doubling capacity factor cuts the cost of each delivered watt by half.
  • Wind farms can be placed closer to demand centers, reducing transmission line costs and transmission line loses.
  • Conventional wind generators are only operable in wind speeds between 3 meters/sec and 28 meters/sec. Magenn Air Rotors are operable between 1 meter/sec and in excess of 28 meters/sec.
  • Magenn Air Rotors can be raised to higher altitudes, thus capitalizing on higher winds aloft. Altitudes from 400-ft to 1,000-ft above ground level are possible, without having to build an expensive tower, or use a crane to perform maintenance.
  • Magenn Air Rotors are mobile and can be easily moved to different locations to correspond to changing wind patterns. Mobility is also useful in emergency deployment and disaster relief situations.

These points are mutually inclusive. The advantages above combine to make Magenn the most cost-effective wind electrical generation system.

Products

Magenn Power Inc. plans to start manufacturing its Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS) in 2009/10 with a 10 kW to 25 kW MARS unit being the first one shipping. (No plans for a 4 kW MARS system at this time)

The reason for the delay is that it is took longer than anticipated raising the funds necessary to finish prototypes and get the product ready for market.

The price for the 10 – 25 kW MARS unit is yet to be determined but it is Magenn’s design goal to deliver product at a cost between the $5 USD to $10 USD dollar per watt range.



The Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS) is a new generation of wind turbines with cost and performance advantages over existing systems.

MARS is a lighter-than-air tethered wind turbine that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, generating electrical energy. This electrical energy is transferred down the tether for consumption, or to a set of batteries or the power grid. Helium sustains the Magenn Air Rotor System, which ascends to an altitude as selected by the operator for the best winds. Its rotation also generates the “Magnus” effect. This aerodynamic phenomenon provides additional lift, keeps the MARS device stabilized, positions MARS within a very controlled and restricted location, and finally, causes MARS to pull up overhead to maximize altitude rather than drift downwind on its tether.

coolearth solar energy plants consist of inflated mirror concentrators which gather sunlight and focus it onto photovoltaic cells. These concentrators increase the energy impacting the solar cells many times over and cost orders of magnitude less per collected area than conventional mirrors. Their strong structure can withstand 100 mph winds and protects the mirrored surface and receiver from rain, insects, dirt, and the elements.

Using cutting-edge technology from Silicon Valley the d.light product line provides economical, safe and high quality replacements for kerosene lanterns, candles, and emergency lanterns.

nova Nova
The Nova, available in both solar and AC chargeable versions, provides up to 40 hours of bright light on a full charge at efficiencies 30-50% greater than fluorescent lights. The Nova is several times brighter than a kerosene lantern and offers a variety of features including brightness level settings and a battery life indicator.
Vega Vega
The Vega is the perfect solution for households with irregular access to electricity. Using our proprietary fast charge technology, the Vega provides about one hour of high quality light for every hour of charge.
comet Comet
The Comet, available in both solar chargeable and AC chargeable versions, will provide light several times brighter than a kerosene lantern at a very affordable price.
