Dyesol’s technology is based on Dye Solar Cell (DSC), which has been identified in the Japanese and EU Photovoltaic Roadmaps as the emerging solar technology, it has also been called the most promising advance in solar cell technology since the invention of the silicon cell.

DSC technology can best be described as ‘artificial photosynthesis’ using an electrolyte, a layer of titania (a pigment used in white paints and tooth paste) and ruthenium dye sandwiched between glass. Light striking the dye excites electrons which are absorbed by the titania to become an electric current many times stronger than that found in natural photosynthesis in plants.

Compared to conventional silicon based photovoltaic technology, Dyesol’s technology has lower cost and embodied energy in manufacture, it produces electricity more efficiently even in low light conditions and can be directly incorporated into buildings by replacing conventional glass panels rather than taking up roof or extra land area.

Advantages include not necessitating the use of high-priced raw materials, a manufacturing process that does not produce toxic emissions, and the potential for rapid efficiency enhancement.

Dyesol enjoys a lead position in developing and commercialising DSC technology.

The building blocks for Dyesol’s products are Dye Solar Cells interconnected and integrated into modules (tiles). The tiles are ochre, with introduction shortly of other colors such as grey, green and blue. These tiles can be connected in series or parallel to produce Solar Panels.

In Dyesol’s registered design for building integratable Solar Panels, the panels are constructed in a laminated structure, with the tiles connected and sandwiched between two panes of glass and fully encapsulated in the UV resistant transparent laminating polymer (Solar Wall Panels). Dyesol’s Solar Wall Panels are designed for exposed mounting and to be isostructural to existing fascia – replacing, not duplicating, the existing facade. Electrical interface can be typically via a short DC bus to a local area network for distribution or inversion to AC.

LS9, Inc., the Renewable Petroleum Company™, is a privately-held industrial biotechnology company based in South San Francisco, California developing patent-pending biofuels made with the power of synthetic biology.

LS9 DesignerBiofuels™ products are customized to closely resemble petroleum fuels, engineered to be clean, renewable, domestically produced, and cost competitive with crude oil.

LS9 is the market leader for hydrocarbon biofuels and is rapidly commercializing and scaling up DesignerBiofuels™ products to meet market demands, including construction of a pilot facility leading to commercial availability. While initially focusing on fuels, LS9 will also develop sustainable industrial chemicals for specialty applications.

LS9 has the financial backing of venture capital firms Flagship Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company’s scientific advisory board (SAB) includes leaders in the fields of synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, microbiology, enzymology, genomics, bioinformatics, and chemical engineering.

Petroleum, on which modern day society was built and is now dependent, is a diminishing resource with increasing environmental, political, and economic disadvantages.

The ideal alternative would be chemically identical to petroleum, allowing broad and rapid adoption, derived from renewable resources, scalable to support current and future demands, domestically derived, and cost competitive without subsidies.

LS9 has developed Renewable Petroleum™ technologies to meet this need.

Pushing the frontiers of synthetic biology and industrial biotechnology, LS9 has created industrial microbes that efficiently convert renewable feedstocks to a portfolio of “drop in compatible” hydrocarbon-based fuels and chemicals. LS9’s unique technology provides a means to genetically control the structure and function of its fuels, enabling a product portfolio that meets the diverse demands of the petroleum economy.

LS9 has developed a new means of efficiently converting fatty acid intermediates into petroleum replacement products via fermentation of renewable sugars. LS9 has also discovered and engineered a new class of enzymes and their associated genes to efficiently convert fatty acids into hydrocarbons. LS9 believes this pathway is the most cost, resource, and energy-efficient way to produce hydrocarbon biofuels and petroleum-replacement products. This translates into efficient land and feedstock use and directly addresses tensions between food versus fuel production.

In the last 41 minutes, the world consumed 100 million gallons of petroleum – the equivalent annual output of a commercial ethanol plant.

Worldwide demand for petroleum products is insatiable. In the United States alone, there are 200,000 miles of pipeline, 170,000 fueling stations, and 243 million registered vehicles – all optimized for petroleum-based transportation fuels. These powerful network effects reinforce the dominance of hydrocarbon fuels and necessitate second-generation biofuels that are compatible with this existing distribution and consumer infrastructure.

LS9 DesignerBiofuels™ products are a family of fuels produced by specially-engineered microbes created via industrial synthetic biology. Starting from raw, natural sources of sugar such as sugar cane and cellulosic biomass, these renewable fuels will fundamentally change the biofuels landscape and set the stage for widespread product adoption and petroleum displacement. LS9 hydrocarbon biofuels have higher energetic content than ethanol or butanol and have fuel properties that are essentially indistinguishable from those of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

LS9’s technology provides a means to genetically control the structure and function of its fuels, enabling a product portfolio that meets the diverse demands of the petroleum economy. LS9 DesignerBiofuels™ products overcome a number of key challenges associated with first-generation biofuels, including infrastructure compatibility, product diversity, product economics, and quality consistency. LS9 products can go directly into vehicles or be further processed at a refinery. The products are designed to be cost-competitive with traditional petroleum products – without subsidies – and be commercially available within a few years.

Based on a highly efficient production method, LS9 products offer increased environmental benefits over production and refinement of crude oil and ethanol. LS9 DesignerBiofuels™ products approach carbon neutrality, with an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide consumed by the plant-based feedstocks as are generated from combustion of the fuels. In addition, LS9 products contain no carcinogens like benzene (commonly found in petroleum) and only trace amounts of sulfur.

The Solel team has the organization, the resources and the project management capabilities needed to design, manufacture and install solar fields for large scale power generation. Longstanding, field-proven experience with parabolic trough solar thermal plants has brought the cost of kWhe produced to competitive market levels.

Led by a team of solar professionals, Solel’s engineering staff combines proven experience with field-tested know-how and draws on more than twenty years of solar thermal research and commercial implementations. Solel employs more than 280 people in their Beit Shemesh, Israel headquarters and has a West Coast U.S. subsidiary.

The company has invested substantial financial resources over the last 14 years to improve the yearly electrical output of the solar fields and in reducing their installation, operations and maintenance costs, resulting in significant improvements to the overall cost-effectiveness of the parabolic trough solar technology.

Solel Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Solel Solar Systems, is a leading developer of solar power plants. Solel Inc. teams with major players in the fields of engineering design, environmental services, transmission and financing to develop utility scale power plants, both in clusters and in stand-alone configurations.

Solel Inc. is developing the 553 MW Mojave Solar Park 1 (MSP-1), the world’s largest solar thermal power plant, in California’s Mojave Desert. In July 2007, Solel Inc. concluded a 25 year Power Purchase Agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) to provide it with electricity from MSP-1. Solel will build MSP-1 using Solel 6, Solel’s industry leading solar thermal collector. MSP-1 will encompass nine square miles and will provide PG&E with 1,388 gigawatts of energy annually at a price competitive with plants powered by fossil fuels.

Solel Inc.’s major focus is the southwest region of the U.S., the world’s largest identified market, with its abundant energy source and excellent proximity to population centers. A report commissioned by the WGA (Western Governor’s Association) predicted that peak power demand by 2015 in the six southwestern states (California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah) will grow by 34 GW, of which 20% (7 GW) is targeted to be provided through renewable power sources.

Solels technology converts sunshine into useful thermal energy, and subsequently into electricity, by way of parabolic mirrors that concentrate the solar energy onto solar thermal receivers containing a heat transfer fluid. The heat transfer fluid is circulated and heated through the receivers, and the heat is released to a series of heat exchangers to generate super-heated steam. The steam powers a turbine/generator to produce electricity delivered to a utilitys electric grid.

A central computerized tracking facility enables optimal absorption of the suns energy by automatically adjusting the alignment of the parabolic mirrors. From the moment the sun rises until it dips over the horizon, all of its rays are captured and converted into usable energy.

With a back-up of alternative fuels, a solar plant can operate beyond daylight hours.

Magenn Power is an Ottawa, Ontario Canada based company.

Magenn Power draws on over 30 years of research and development in advance materials and structure. It all began with designing the Magnus Spherical Airship starting in 1978. Fred Ferguson (founder of Magenn Power) patented the Magnus Airship in the 1980s. This unique airship utilized the Magnus effect for the first time in lighter-than-air craft. This Magnus Airship was a large spherical envelope filled with helium to achieve static, buoyant lift. As the sphere rotated during forward motion, Magnus lift was generated proportional to the airspeed flowing over the sphere; the faster the vehicle, the higher the Magnus lift.

The Magenn Power Air Rotor System (MARS) is an innovative lighter-than-air tethered device that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, efficiently generating clean renewable electrical energy at a lower cost than all competing systems. This electrical energy is transferred down the tether to a transformer at a ground station and then transferred to the electricity power grid. Helium (an inert non-reactive lighter than air gas) sustains the Air Rotor which ascends to an altitude for best winds and its rotation also causes the Magnus effect. This provides additional lift, keeps the device stabilized, keeps it positioned within a very controlled and restricted location, and causes it to pull up overhead rather than drift downwind on its tether.

All competing wind generators use bladed two-dimensional disk-like structures and rigid towers. The Magenn Power Air Rotor system is a closed three-dimensional structure (cylinder). It offers high torque, low starting speeds, and superior overall efficiency thanks to its ability to deploy higher. The closed structure allows Magenn Power to produce wind rotors from very small to very large sizes at a fraction of the cost of current wind generators.

The distinct advantages of the Magenn Air Rotor System design are as follows:

  • Magenn Air Rotor System is less expensive per unit of actual electrical energy output than competing wind power systems.
  • Magenn Power Air Rotor System will deliver time-averaged output much closer to its rated capacity than the capacity factor typical with conventional designs. Magenn efficiency will be 40 to 50 percent. This is hugely important, since doubling capacity factor cuts the cost of each delivered watt by half.
  • Wind farms can be placed closer to demand centers, reducing transmission line costs and transmission line loses.
  • Conventional wind generators are only operable in wind speeds between 3 meters/sec and 28 meters/sec. Magenn Air Rotors are operable between 1 meter/sec and in excess of 28 meters/sec.
  • Magenn Air Rotors can be raised to higher altitudes, thus capitalizing on higher winds aloft. Altitudes from 400-ft to 1,000-ft above ground level are possible, without having to build an expensive tower, or use a crane to perform maintenance.
  • Magenn Air Rotors are mobile and can be easily moved to different locations to correspond to changing wind patterns. Mobility is also useful in emergency deployment and disaster relief situations.

These points are mutually inclusive. The advantages above combine to make Magenn the most cost-effective wind electrical generation system.

Pictures below show older conceptual drawings of the Magenn Air Rotor System

Magenn Power Inc. plans to start manufacturing its Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS) in 2009/10 with a 10 kW to 25 kW MARS unit being the first one shipping. (No plans for a 4 kW MARS system at this time)

The reason for the delay is that it is took longer than anticipated raising the funds necessary to finish prototypes and get the product ready for market.

The price for the 10 – 25 kW MARS unit is yet to be determined but it is Magenn’s design goal to deliver product at a cost between the $5 USD to $10 USD dollar per watt range.

The Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS) is a new generation of wind turbines with cost and performance advantages over existing systems.

MARS is a lighter-than-air tethered wind turbine that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, generating electrical energy. This electrical energy is transferred down the tether for consumption, or to a set of batteries or the power grid. Helium sustains the Magenn Air Rotor System, which ascends to an altitude as selected by the operator for the best winds. Its rotation also generates the “Magnus” effect. This aerodynamic phenomenon provides additional lift, keeps the MARS device stabilized, positions MARS within a very controlled and restricted location, and finally, causes MARS to pull up overhead to maximize altitude rather than drift downwind on its tether.

The Advantages of MARS over Conventional Wind Turbines are:

  1. low cost electricity – under 15 cents per kWh
  2. bird and bat friendly
  3. lower noise
  4. wide range of wind speeds – 2 to more than 28 meters/second
  5. higher altitudes – from 200 to 1,000 feet above ground level are possible without expensive towers or cranes
  6. fewer limits on placement location – coast line placement is not necessary
  7. ability to install closer to the power grid
  8. mobile
  9. ideal for off grid applications or where power is not reliable.

Initial MARS Target Markets include:

  1. developing and island nations where infrastructure is limited or non existent
  2. rapid deployment (to include airdrop) to disaster areas for power to emergency and medical equipment, water pumps, and relief efforts (ex. Katrina, Tsunami)
  3. off grid for cottages and remote uses such as cell towers and exploration equipment)
  4. and military applications.

SUNRGI is in the business of designing and developing solar energy systems. It was formed by five, experienced, entrepreneurial, inventive individuals with the goal of creating a renewable energy source that would be available at fossil fuel prices. Its work has led to the development of an entirely new solar energy category: Xtreme Concentrated Photovoltaics™ or XCPV™. SUNRGI maintains offices in Reno, Silicon Valley and Los Angeles.

On and Off-Grid Distribution Other solar technologies, solar thermal in particular, need to be implemented as part of large power stations. SUNRGI’s system however, can be deployed in small configurations allowing lower and more variable entry points into the solar market. SUNRGI can provide discreet, off-grid “power plants” that can be sited in any sun-suitable location.

Modularity SUNRGI’s modular design enables a power station to be distributed over a number of sites. A large power station can be divided into a number of sub-stations which makes for easier access to suitable land.

Upgradeability Unlike traditional PV technology, SUNRGI’s design is upgradeable, allowing it to take advantage of future advances in PV technology.

Concentrated Energy Since the sunlight is concentrated, fewer PV cells are needed thereby reducing the cost-per-watt of generated electricity. Also, it is a more efficient format from which to extract heat.

Longevity With SUNRGI’s proprietary heat removal technology the PV cells have a longer useful life.

Economy SUNRGI’s system costs significantly less per installed Watt than traditional PV technology. Expected advances in technology, maturity and volume production will further increase this cost advantage.

SUNRGI has created a new solar energy system that will soon make it possible to produce electricity at a wholesale cost of 5-cents per kWh (kilowatt hour), a price that is competitive with the wholesale cost of producing electricity using fossil fuels and a fraction of the current cost of solar energy. The system is called Xtreme Concentrated Photovoltaics™ or XCPV™.

Virtually everyone has used a magnifying glass to focus sunlight down to a small, very bright, hot spot of light. SUNRGI uses this same principle in its Xtreme Concentrated Photovoltaics™ (XCPV™) system (patents pending). SUNRGI efficiently concentrates sunlight so that it is more than 1,600 times brighter than the sun. This concentrated sunlight is focused onto photovoltaic (PV) solar cells that convert more than 37% of the sunlight directly into electricity.

coolearth develops and owns solar power plants utilizing their own proprietary concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) technology. coolearth has engineered a cost efficient power plant that competes economically with conventional fuels.

coolearth is pursuing the rapid deployment of their technology which radically reduces the material and weight of CPV. Their technology consists of an inflated concentrator and a tensegrity truss rigging structure. This material minimization approach allows them to scale to meet the world’s growing energy demand. Since the sun offers us an abundance of energy each day to more than meet the entire earth’s energy needs, and the sun’s energy is clean and renewable, it provides our best option to avoid burning fossil fuels.
coolearth solar concentrators dramatically increase solar collection efficiency with a minimum of materials. The coolearth team is qualified to meet the challenge and construct the next generation of power plants that are clean, competitively priced, and scalable.

coolearth technology is disruptive and available today! coolearth technolog is cost competitive with fossil fuel power plants and they are pursuing the rapid deployment of their technology.

coolearth concentrator

coolearth solar energy plants consist of inflated mirror concentrators which gather sunlight and focus it onto photovoltaic cells. These concentrators increase the energy impacting the solar cells many times over and cost orders of magnitude less per collected area than conventional mirrors. Their strong structure can withstand 100 mph winds and protects the mirrored surface and receiver from rain, insects, dirt, and the elements.

Multiple 400

coolearth concentrators are suspended in series on support and control cables stretched between poles. By suspending the concentrators, vast areas of land can be easily converted for solar energy production, with limited environmental impact. The ground beneath the concentrators remains free for other uses, such as farming or ranching.
